DSLR Camera: Controlling Settings -

Camera Settings -

Aperture: 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 16, 22, 32, 66
  • When moving to the left digit, for example 8 to 5.6, the light let in is halved. The opposite happens for moving right.

Shutter Speed: 30", 15", 8", 4", 2", 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/15, 1/30, 1/60, 1/125, 1/250, 1/500, 1/1000
  • When the " sign is there it means seconds, the / sign means of a second; for example 30" means 30 seconds whilst 1/30 means one 30th of of a second.
  • Blur is most likely to occur when increasing the time taken for the shutter to close; values with " are more likely to record blur than values with /.
ISO: 100, 200, 400
  • The lower the ISO figure the less light and less noise; for example ISO 100 lets a lot less light in than ISO 400. ISO 400 also has more noise in the image than ISO 100.
  • Large aperture: small f/stop value: narrow depth of field: blurring: portraits.
  • Small aperture: large f/stop value: wide depth of field: focused: landscapes.
Depth of Field:
  • A low f/stop value gives shallow depth of field and adds blur to the image whilst a high f/stop number is wide depth of field with little or no blur.
