Photoshoot 2: Surrealism Physical Photomontage: Work Diary Evaluation -

Photoshoot 2: Work Diary Evaluation -

Equipment Used:
Canon EOS 450D, standard lens, fill lights, black backdrop.

Settings:
1/60, F/16, ISO 200.

Lighting:
Fill lights.

Theory:
The self-constrcuted ideas of identity, anonymity and culture.

Favourite(s):

This image is one of my favourite due to the use of monotone colours and the sinister undertones. The cutting came out well although I may have rearranged the composition slightly if I were to re-shoot.

Additionally, I would also consider making a mini series based from this where the same image is changed into multiple montages with various layers starting at the normal anatomy, muscle structures and then bones.

This image is a favourite despite the fact that the flame extended much further than was expected. The image therefore creates an unpredictability and loss of identity within society.

If I were to shoot again I would try and use a more predictable flame but also dress the subject myself to match the desired aesthetic. I could also experiment completing this technique with old family photographs to create a more poignant message.

This image is a favourite of mine as it shows the broken reflections of self identity and body image. The composition was interesting too with a chaotic element to it that is indicative of a broken mirror which is designed to serve as a symbolic sign relating to the afore mentioned meanings.

If I were to again complete this image then I would  consider printing the image in multiple sizes so that layering and distortion could be more exaggerated and thus I would also be able to create the illusion of a shattered mirror in a circular pattern.

Least Favourite(s):

This image is my least favourite as it was completed in the style of Hannah Hoch who is interesting to study but not of an inspirational aesthetic to me in the same respect as other artists and photographers such as Flora Borsi and Lucas Simoes.

However, the ideas that created this piece were in relation to a journey. The faces of the subjects are to mimic planets in space with the rocket, stamps and maps inferring a distant journey. Although, this image was also created for the fun of doing so and, as Dada championed, some work does not always need to have a meaning behind them.

Evaluation and Development -

In relation to the above shoot I believe that the final physical experiments are successful due to their exploration of the medium and the evidential inspiration routed from a wide selection of photographers and artists. The aesthetics of the images vary greatly and show the level of thought and time that was invested into each final outcome.

This is a technique that I could imagine using again in the future due to the success of this shoot and the ability to explore ideas even further due to the unlimited methods of physical manipulation such as collage, burning and exposing to water.
