Connecting Essay 2: Yorch Miranda -

Connecting Essay 2 -

Morgan Redman:

Yorch Miranda:

The first photographic outcome seen above is my surreal experimentation of the 2D medium of photography and its limitations. I was inspired by the idea of changing the scale of subjects to create a surreal photograph that any audience could relate to due to the banal context of the photograph. The technique itself could be considered within, or closely related to, the miniaturism artistic movement. My photograph is of two subjects that were printed and cut out physically before being placed in various scenarios. The success of this image is routed in its simplicity and its framing in the form of a square opposed to the rectangular frame employed by most photographers.

In relation to the second photograph shown above, the creator Miranda implements a skill that is part of the polaroid vision and paper art community. The photographs used to create the surreal illusions are paper cut outs of vintage photographs that are then given a story relating to their pose, clothing or other such features. The success of Miranda's images are due to their inventive narratives and characters. In particular this image appears to connote the idea of proletariat workers being in the pocket of their bourgeoisie counterparts who encourage the reinforcement of the capitalist system and all of these ideas can be understood from the composition, clothing and location of each final outcome. Miranda's personal technique is not only related to the use of paper cut outs but it also linked to his signature style of black and white filters to mimic the vintage photographs and also the use of square framing. Due to the creative humorous exploration of surrealism that is evident within the work of miniature photographer such as Miranda and Slinkachu I have been inspired in my project by the ideas and techniques.

This technique when related to Miranda is considered to be beneath various genres by various audiences although the technique to me is surreal miniaturism. One vital difference between the work of Miranda and that of my own is that Miranda uses pre-existing photographs that fit the theme he intends to focus on for each image. In contrast, the photographic elements of my work is referenced through the initial subject photography which are used as the paper cut outs but also through capturing the final photograph when the whole story is provided. Moreover, I decided against implementing a black and white filter which would have made my work more like a direct pastiche of Miranda's but instead decided to adapt it to fit my own ideas and as such used Photoshop editing software to reduce the saturation of the final outcome. Despite the differences, I did draw direct inspiration from the work of the surreal photographer Miranda in reference to the compositional framing of the subjects in accordance with the rule of thirds grid method.
